Begur: the medieval gem of the Costa Brava

Table of Contents

If you’ve chosen L’Estartit or its surroundings for your vacation, you’ll have already realized it’s an unbeatable base due to its proximity to beaches, ports, hiking trails, and charming towns like Begur. Yes, these are places you can take a day trip to and further enrich your Costa Brava journey.

Do you want to know everything there is to see in Begur? We’ll tell you all about this town that breaks away from the flat landscape, rising above a massif of hills that plunge towards the sea.

What to see in Begur: historic center

The town of Begur is not just a stopover on the way to the beach; it’s a destination in itself. There are so many things to see in Begur that we recommend leaving the car aside and getting lost in its streets on foot to discover its five must-sees.

#1 The Historic Center and its castle

The first thing you need to do is climb to the very top. Begur Castle is the symbol of the town and a key part of its history, dating back to the 11th century. Today, only its walls remain, as it has survived three wars that left it practically in ruins.

The climb is short and very well adapted, and once at the top, the views are postcard-perfect; you’ll be able to spot the Medes Islands and also the Pyrenees — if the day is clear.

But the best thing to see in the town of Begur is its network of narrow streets and squares. And for that, you just need to stroll through the center towards your next destination.

#2 The Indiano Houses

Strolling through the center, you’ll also see buildings that don’t seem typical of a Catalan village. These are the houses of the ‘Indianos,’ Begur residents who made their fortune in the Americas in the 19th century. Their colorful facades, frescoes, and palm trees in the gardens completely tint the town. If you’re looking for what to see in Begur in one day, following the Indiano route is a must.

#3 Cultural Casino and Sant Ramon Tower

Don’t miss the Cultural Casino, an Indiano building that has served as the heart of the town’s social life for decades. It’s a place with a lot of history where you can enjoy very current film screenings.

And if you look closely as you walk, you’ll see several siliceous stone defense towers scattered throughout the urban area, such as the Sant Ramon Tower. These structures were erected during the 16th century to provide refuge and protection for residents from fierce pirate attacks.

#4 Arbreda Park

If you come to Begur with children, you have to stop for a while at Arbreda Park. It’s a fantastic green area right at the entrance of the town where they sometimes organize activities and set up inflatables.

#5 The Coastal Paths (Caminos de Ronda)

If after seeing the town you’re still wanting more, you have to explore its famous coastal paths: the Caminos de Ronda. They were formerly used by fishermen to travel between coves and by the Civil Guard to monitor smuggling, but today they are a true paradise for those looking to walk with the sound of waves in the background. Are you one of them?

Viewpoints worth visiting

If you’re wondering what to see in Begur and what can be skipped, the viewpoints are not in doubt… you have to go to at least these three! Begur is, literally, a balcony to the Mediterranean and will offer you some of the best panoramic views of the entire Costa Brava.

One of the most special is the Carmen Amaya viewpoint, dedicated to the legendary flamenco dancer who lived her last years here; from here, the views of the town and the castle are beautiful.

And if you’re looking for a broader panorama of the Empordà interior, the Son Moles viewpoint is for you, while the Puig Son Ric viewpoint is one of the highest points to see the entire coastline.

Beaches and coves

If you’re looking for the top things to see in Begur on the Costa Brava… it’s its sandy beaches! And that’s why we bring you a list with several so you can choose which one to visit yourself.

  • Sa Riera: it’s the largest and features houses right on the sand. It’s perfect if you’re visiting Begur with children because it’s easily accessible and has all services close at hand.
  • Aiguablava: this one has the most turquoise blue water, which is why many travelers consider it one of the most famous sights to see on the Costa Brava.
  • Platja de l’Illot: the perfect option if you’re looking for something a bit wilder and don’t mind walking a little along the coastal path.
  • Sa Tuna: for many — and we include ourselves — this is the most beautiful cove of all. It’s small, secluded, and surrounded by white houses with colorful doors, the typical image you’ll see on any Costa Brava map.

Are you coming to enjoy all that Begur has to offer?

Now that you’ve decided to include Begur in your places to visit this vacation, all that’s left is to organize how to get here and where to stay. As we said at the beginning, L’Estartit is an ideal option; it’s only 15 km away and will take you barely 20 minutes.

It’s a short and comfortable journey through the landscapes of Baix Empordà along the GI-641 road. With that sorted, all that’s left is to find where to stay so you can also enjoy everything there is to see in L’Estartit and other nearby towns like Pals or L’Escala. And for that, you just need to click on their apartments, which is where we keep all the accommodations we have at Apartamentos L’Estartit.

Who are we? A group with over 40 years of experience in tourist accommodations in the Empordà area. We certainly don’t lack experience and a track record. Will you come and enjoy the Costa Brava with us?
